We don’t know if General Hospital knew what it was setting up, but with Leslie Charleson’s passing over the weekend, we’ll all soon be confronted with life in Port Charles without Monica Quartermaine.

On Monday’s episode (recapped here), Tracy explained where the doctor has been to Stella, telling her that after the Quartermaine matriarch’s fall last year, what with Willow and Drew’s betrayal and Michael’s accident, Monica has refused to leave her room. In turn, Stella replied that if they ever did lose Monica, Tracy could step in to be the new matriarch and keep the family together.

And that, we hope, is signaling what will happen when the Quartermaines grapple with Monica’s passing. For years, the running joke on General Hospital about the mansion whenever any of the Quartermaines referred to it as “mine” has been “It’s Monica’s house, Alan gave it to her.” And it was, indeed, his wedding present to her. Over the years, it’s become home to all the Quartermaines — to the point where every member of the family feels entitled to ownership no matter how many times Monica has corrected them!

With her gone, where does it go next? There are no shortage of Quartermaines — Ned, Michael, Jason, Drew, Brook Lynn — but that doesn’t mean any of them have a claim to the property. About the only we could see would be Jason, as he was raised by Monica and Alan.

But for our money, there’s only one person who should get it next: Tracy. No, she and her sister-in-law haven’t always gotten along (to put it mildly), but like it or not, the mansion long ago transitioned from Monica’s home to the Quartermaines’. And Tracy’s the only one in the family who could keep everyone together — if necessary, by sheer force of will.

Plus, she’s been running things at the mansion through all of Monica’s absence. And we can’t imagine it getting much better than for Tracy to pick up the line going forward: “It’s my house, Monica gave it to me.”
