Emmerdale has aired a new shock for April Windsor as Ross Barton shared her mum’s real reason for jumping to her death 10 years ago.
In recent episodes, April learnt her mum sacrificed herself to catch Gary North. In 2014, police officer Donna, who had been diagnosed with lung cancer, jumped off a roof with Gary after he threatened to hurt April.
Tonight’s (December 11) scenes saw April getting closer to Ross as she was eager to know more about Donna. The the two had a meal at Hide and talked about her mum.
Quizzed by April, Ross told her he only learnt Donna had cancer after she died.
The teen became suspicious, questioning his previous version of the tragic events. Ross had told April that Donna jumped off the multi-storey car park knowing she hadn’t long left to live and seeing that as the last resort to apprehend Gary.
April was hurt as she imagined her mum must’ve loved her job more than her and voiced her upset to Ross. He tried to convince her Gary wasn’t just some random criminal, revealing the real reason why Donna went to such extreme lengths.
“He was a really bad man,” Ross told April. “He was threatening to hurt you in the most disgusting way.”
He then added: “She was protecting you.”

April was frustrated with Ross changing the truth again, and started blaming herself for her mum’s death before storming out of the bistro.
This is the beginning of a Christmas storyline for the teen, who’s set to rebel as she struggles to come to terms with her mum’s passing.
