The third episode of the second half of “Yellowstone” Season 5
premiered this past Sunday and took a closer look at
the unceremonious death of Gov. John Dutton.
Hollywood star Kevin Costner played Dutton since the show’s 2018 Paramount Network premiere but formally announced in June he would not return for the show’s apparent final season.
Costner’s character was killed off in the opening moments of the back half of Season 5 with an inglorious, bloody bathroom gunshot death made to look like a suicide. While Costner’s stunt double played the dead Dutton and viewers were spared from really gory images in that episode, that was not the case in Sunday’s episode, where Dutton’s stiffened and blue body is thoroughly examined by the coroner.
Dutton’s death is fully revealed in a flashback during the episode, where three balaclava-wearing pros grab the sleeping governor, drag him to the bathroom, drug him and force a gun into his hand and hold it up to his head.
